Emaciated dog rescued from clothing donation bin

HYDE PARK – Dutchess County SPCA officials have named her Sally, short for Salvation.

Sally is a tan, two to three year old dog rescued Monday from a clothing donation bin. She was dumped in the metal box at the Stop and Shop on St. Andrews Road in Hyde Park where she lay starving with no food or water for an estimated week. The only things she consumed during her ordeal were some plastic berries on clothing that was dumped inside.

Sally has been checked out and appears in good health despite her ordeal. Veterinarian Dr. Joseph Palamara said despite being grossly neglected and suffering from malnourishment, pending blood work, Sally’s prognosis for recovery is good.

She is in a foster home right now, said SPCA Executive Director Joyce Garrity, who said she has never seen a case of animal cruelty that was so heinous.

Officials are asking anyone who may have witnesses the dumping of Sally to call them at 845-452-7722.

Garrity said they have had discussions with the Dutchess County District Attorney’s Office to press charges if the perpetrator is caught.
