| Woman arrested in forged check scam |

NEWBURGH – Town of Newburgh Police have arrested a City of Newburgh woman following an investigation into a forged check scam. Police said Nikiea Smith, 26, allegedly opened an account at a local Town of Newburgh bank and then began to deposit and cash forged checks. She was charged with the felonies of possession of a forged instrument in the second degree, four counts; grand larceny in the fourth degree, one count; and two counts of the misdemeanor of petit larceny. During the investigation it was found that Smith is currently under parole with the state Division of Parole. She was arraigned and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail. |
