Bronx man charged with attempted rape of college student

NEW PALTZ – Police in New Paltz Saturday morning arrested a 21-year-old Bronx man and charged him with attempted rape in the first degree for allegedly attacking a 20-year-old college student.

At 5:30 a.m., police received a 911 call from a woman who reported being assaulted in the Village of New Paltz. Police broadcast a description of the suspect and Albin Mercado was located a short time later on Main Street in the village.

As police began to take him into custody, he fought with officers and attempted to flee. Once in handcuffs, Mercado again tried to flee the area.

He was also charged with second-degree assault, unlawful imprisonment in the first degree, resisting arrest and escape in the second degree.

He was remanded to the Ulster County Jail on $50,00 bail pending a future court appearance.
