Mount Vernon cop takes his own life

MOUNT VERNON – A Mount Vernon city police officer, who was on the force since January 2007, apparently took his own life, city officials said Tuesday.

Police Officer Daniel Vize was found on the third level of the municipal parking lot 9 across the street from Mount Vernon City Hall in his parked automobile. He appears to have suffered a single fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound, officials said. The department is awaiting a final report from the medical examiner, but officials said the death is not suspicious and is not looking for any suspects.

Police Commissioner David Chong said Vize’s family comes from a long tradition of police service. His father is a police lieutenant with the New Castle Police Department. His sister services as a police officer with the Westchester County Department of Public Safety, and both uncles serve as police officers with municipal Westchester police departments. He also had family members who were retired from NYPD.

“This is a tragic loss of life of a fine young man and public servant,” said Mayor Clinton Young, Jr.
