| Putnam accountant arraigned on payroll theft, tax evasion charges |
|
WHITE PLAINS – A Carmel man, a certified public accountant, was arraigned Friday in Westchester County Court on charges of grand larceny in the first degree and repeated failure to file a state personal income tax return. The charges related to payroll and tax fraud allegedly committed against his former employer. Between June 17, 2005 and April 15, 2008, Todd Newman, 48, a CPA with offices in Yonkers and New York City, stole over $1.6 million from B. Schoenberg & Co., a recycler of plastics and engineering resins headquartered in Yorktown Heights. In committing the fraud, Newman allegedly wrote unauthorized checks to himself from the payroll account and diverting funds meant to pay withholding taxes to the state without the knowledge, consent or permission of the company owners. Newman’s bail was set at $250,000 cash or $500,000 bond. If convicted, he could receive from five to 25 years in state prison. |
