High school seniors learn about student loans

THIELLS – How difficult will it be for students entering college to secure loans to pay for their education? That was the question on the minds of seniors at North Rockland High School in Thiells Friday.

Congressman John Hall met with the college-bound students to explain the loan situation given the continuing drop in the stock market.

“We’ve hear recently that there has been such a shortage of credit for student loans that some students have been transferring down from four year colleges back to community colleges because they can’t get the credit or they can’t afford the interest rates that are being charged to go to a four year SUNY or a private school and as result, they are doing reverse transfers, which is the first time people in the education business have seen that,” he said.

Students also wanted assurances that banks were not in cahoots with colleges to peddle loans as was discovered a few years ago.
