Driving prank leads to serious injury

ST. REMY – One teen is in the hospital with a serious head injury and another has been charged with reckless driving after the two friends thought they were having a good time Tuesday evening.

The Ulster County Sheriff’s Office said Christopher Goodyear, 18, of Tillson, was driving his Jeep Cherokee on Lake View Terrace in St. Remy while his friend, Fred Esposito, 16, of Ulster Park, was clinging to the rear bumper.

Goodyear made a turn and Esposito fell off the vehicle and onto the roadway.

He was airlifted to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie for a head injury and was listed in serious condition.

Goodyear was charged with reckless driving and permitting a person to cling to a vehicle.

The investigation is continuing.

Deputy sheriffs were assisted at the scene by the Town of Esopus Volunteer Ambulance Squad, Mobile Life Support and Stat Flight Helicopter Services.
