Greene County economy: relatively good shape

NEW BALTIMORE – The economy of Greene County is in relatively good shape and appears to be weathering the mild recession, according to Frank Surdey, state Labor Department analyst.

Surdey, who addressed a Tuesday evening meeting of local business officials in New Baltimore, said in recent times, construction, finance, trade and transportation categories slipped slightly, but for the most part, the county’s economy is in relatively good shape.

“One of the uniquenesses that I have seen about Greene County, it has been able to maintain its manufacturing job base for the past 20 years,” he said. “It really has not eroded at all as it has on the state and national levels. So, that is quite atypical and a pretty good sign for the local community.”

Surdey said there will be lots of seasonal activity this summer, and the county could snap out of an economic downturn beginning in July.

Surdey spoke to a meeting of the Greene County IDA, Greene County Chamber of Commerce and the Coxsackie Area Chamber of Commerce.
