Black dirt region fire levels house

NEW HAMPTON – A fire that was first reported as smoke coming from the attic leveled the wood frame farmhouse at 231 Celery Avenue in New Hampton early Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the home being across the narrow road from the Wallkill River, firefighters established a tank task force and trucked in water from fire departments across south and central Orange County.

There were no reports of injuries, but an hour-and-a-half after the fire was called in, all that was left were some smoldering timbers and a chimney, which were visible through a large billow of white smoke that surrounded the rubble.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.
