Fire leaves four families homeless

Firefighters overhaul Newburgh fire

NEWBURGH – Fire Saturday afternoon in the City of Newburgh gutted the first story back portion of a three-story wood frame apartment house at 193 Liberty Street, leaving 15 people homeless.

All members of the four families escaped unharmed and were being provided temporary shelter through the Red Cross.

One fireman suffered a minor injury to his hand and was treated at St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital, said Deputy Fire Chief Chris Barrett.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Barrett said he was told there were no smoke alarms or fire extinguishers in the building.
