Senate passes bill to waive license plate fee for certain Purple Heart medal recipients

ALBANY - the State Senate has passed a bill that would waive the fee on Purple Heart license plates for those veterans who are age 62 or older and who have received a Purple Heart Medal.

Under current law, Purple Heart Medal recipients must pay an additional $15 to the State Department of Motor Vehicles to obtain the distinctive Purple Heart license plate.

"The Purple Heart medal is a decoration that embodies the special sacrifice which has been made by our men and women who have been wounded or killed in combat in the service of their country," said Senator William Larkin. "This is just one small way we can further acknowledge the individuals who have earned the Purple Heart and attempt to thank them for their sacrifice."

The bill was unanimously passed by the Senate by a vote of 61-0. It was sent to the Assembly.
