| Police pay tribute to fallen comrades |
||
Poughkeepsie - Rained poured down Friday afternoon as Town of Poughkeepsie Police honored fallen comrades at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery, where a plot was donated to the police department back in 1990 in remembrance of all police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Two dozen New York State troopers, Dutchess County sheriff’s deputies, and City of Poughkeepsie police officers joined them in a moment of silence for fallen officers, a three-gun salute, and the placing of a wreath at the cemetery site. Poughkeepsie Town Police Sergeant Brett Kirchner said that he has been fortunate enough to not see any officer in the town lose his life in the line of duty in his 18 years of service, but that every day is still a great risk. “You never know when you get out of the station what you’re going to end up with,” he said. Some days go slow and the biggest highlight of the day could be eating your breakfast.” But, Kirchner said officers never know what they will be up against when they go out on the street every day.
