| Health commissioner to outline concerns of chloramination of water |
|
POUGHKEEPSIE – When the joint water board changed the method of purifying the water in the joint water district of the City and Town of Poughkeepsie from chlorination to chloramination, some Dutchess County legislators said they received calls from constituents about them feeling ill. As a result, a resolution was placed before the county legislature calling on the county Health Department to study the health impact of chloramination of water on humans. But, at the Family and Human Services Committee meeting Thursday, Health Commissioner Dr. Michael Caldwell told lawmakers he didn’t have the staff and resources to conduct such a study. After discussion, they came to an agreement. “Perhaps we can piece some of these materials together that would be satisfactory to the legislators to give as a packet of information with maybe a cover letter that might assist you with responding to your constituents as well as giving them an avenue to explore in more detail some of these questions,” he told lawmakers. The sponsor of the original measure, Joel Tyner, noted to lawmakers that there are other forms of water purification the county could and should explore. |
