Gas tax holiday debate reaches county level

KINGSTON – The Ulster County Legislature has begun discussing whether it should back a gasoline sales tax holiday on the state and federal levels or support other ways of dealing with the out-of-control price hikes.

The County Legislature’s Ways and Means Committee Wednesday began talking about the tax issue with committee Chairman Alan Lomita saying there will no doubt be differences of opinion.

“It seems to be breaking down along the same lines as state and federal government, whether or not simply eliminating tax for a three month period of time does anything for the consumer, and second, nobody is replacing the revenue lost with any additional revenue,” he said. “That revenue in the state and federal government is used for the maintenance of roads and the maintenance of bridges.”

The Democrat controlled Ulster Legislature follows the same logic as the Democrat controlled state Assembly, which opposes a gas tax holiday.
