Neighborhood center renamed to honor memory of former rec leader

KINGSTON – The Midtown Neighborhood Center in the City of Kingston is now going to be called the Andy Murphy Midtown Neighborhood Center.

The City Council voted Tuesday night to rename the facility after the man who was the city’s parks and recreation superintendent.

He was an icon in Kingston, said City Council Majority Leader William Reynolds.

“He was the kind of person who didn’t have a bad bone in his body and he proved to be valuable education and leadership resource for generations of children in Kingston,” he said. “He was always looking out for the kids, always trying to help them find their way, particularly kids who may not have had as much family support as they probably could have or should have. He was always there for them.”

Andy Murphy, who died last year, served the city for over 30 years.
