| Lowey pushes for relief to mortgage crisis |
|
WHITE PLAINS – Congresswoman Nita Lowey of Westchester County Monday lent her support to legislation that would expand the Federal Housing Administration loan insurance program to aid homeowners at risk of losing their homes. Lowey said the mortgage foreclosure crisis is not getting any better. “Foreclosure judgments are up 80 percent from this time in 2007 and the federal government has a responsibility to help people who are struggling to avoid losing their homes, both to help those individuals and to mitigate the damage to our overall economy,” she said. “A failure to act would surely continue the severe toll the housing crisis is having on our economy and our communities.” Lowey said expanding the FHA loan insurance program would help borrowers at risk of losing their homes who currently cannot refinance because their home is worth less than their current mortgage. |
