‘Tax Freedom Day’ should be wake up call, says Assembly GOP

ALBANY – Tax Freedom Day, the third highest in the nation, was marked in New York on Monday. That refers to the amount of days people must work to earn enough money to pay their combined federal, state and local tax obligations.

State Assembly Minority Republicans marked the date with a call for tax reform.

Marc Molinaro of Tivoli said New York residents are getting it from all directions from the taxman.

“I don’t think person in the entire country that’s more overtaxed than the average New Yorker,” he said.

Joel Miller of Poughkeepsie said all one need do is compare New York to other more progressive states.

“California with twice the number of people we have, twice the number of immigrants, twice the number of people on Medicaid, twice the number of every problem, they spend less than 50 percent more than we do,” he said. “We just spend too much and until we stop doing that, we are going to tax too much and that will drive everyone out of the state.”

Assembly Republicans are proposing a number of bills, including to cap school property tax levies by four percent or the rate of inflation, increasing the state income limit from $50,000 to $60,000 for taxpayers who claim 100 percent on their Federal Child and Dependent Care Credit; raising the Dependent Credit from $1,000 to $2,000; and enacting a state gas tax holiday on gasoline.
