Fishkill, builder and scouts join in Arbor Day ceremony

FISHKILL - Coming on the heels of Earth Day, the green theme continued in the Town of Fishkill with the planting of four maple trees on Arbor Day, April 25.

Toll Brothers donated the trees, which were placed at Shepheard Memorial Park by members of Cub Scout Pack 54 and the Town of Fishkill Parks Department.

A plaque commemorating the Arbor Day gift and planting was placed at the base of each tree.

“Toll Brothers, which already has assisted the town, and our residents, by providing less-than-market cost condominiums through our Housing program, has shown its sense of community once again by contributing these lovely maple trees,” said Fishkill Supervisor Joan Pagones. “And our young scouts will forever be credited for a job well done, thanks to the engraving on these decorative plaques.”

The trees were donated through Bill Murnane, who is a manager with Toll Brothers. A Fishkill resident, Murnane is also a member of the town’s Environmental Advisory Board. A former longtime scout leader, he said the Cubs’ request for the trees was enthusiastically received. Scouting is “near and dear to me,” he said.

“These are nice big trees, and we had to use the town’s rack truck to transport them,” Murnane said. The maples already stand about 10 to 12 feet, “so they’ll mature pretty fast,” he said.

The four trees were planted near the Little League diamond at Shepheard Park, two along the first base side and a pair paralleling the third base line. The plantings stand just outside the ballfield fence.
