| Hydrogen discharge leads to hazmat condition on busy Wallkill road |
||
WALLKILL – Tower Drive right by Wallkill Town Hall and Police Headquarters had to be shut down Sunday afternoon when a town police officer noticed a discharge of hydrogen gas spewing from a vent at the Turbine Airfoil Coating company facility. Local fire and Orange County Haz-Mat personnel were called to the scene as a precaution, said Police Chief Robert Hertman. It was determined the hydrogen dissipated on its own; however, the road was closed as a precaution because if the flammable nature of the gas. Being lighter than air, though, it dissipated in time while first responders remained on the scene. Town Hall was evacuated as Little Leaguers were in the building, Hertman said. There were no injuries during the operation and he said inspectors from the company said their venting equipment functioned properly.
