Woman charged with selling stolen property on eBay

BREWSTER – A Brewster woman has been arrested by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office after it was determined that she was selling stolen property from her home over the Internet on eBay.

Sheriff’s officials were tipped off by Connecticut State Police that a Putnam County residence may be selling stolen merchandise on the Web.

An owner of a Kent, CT gift shop reported to police that a number of limited edition collectables had been stolen from her business during the past nine months.  A person affiliated with the store found the stolen items being sold on eBay and alerted Connecticut authorities.

Putnam authorities investigated resulting in the identification of Paula Read of 35 Main Street in Brewster as the seller. Investigators then made arrangements to meet her at her apartment to purchase a stolen collectable.

On April 28, investigators met Read and purchased a box figurine entitled “Shock and Awe” created by the English artist Peter Cavesbert. She was taken into custody.

Further investigation revealed Read is suspected of stealing about $3,600 work of limited edition items from the business.

She was charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fifth degree, a misdemeanor.

Connecticut State Police are also considering filing criminal charges.
