Catskills region judge resigns

ALBANY -- The New York State Commission on Judicial Conduct has accepted a stipulation from Walton Village Justice Roland Beers in Delaware County that he resign from office and never seek or accept judicial office in the future.

Judge Beers had been charged with violating the rights of defendants and failing to effectuate their right to counsel in three cases, despite having been previously cautioned for such conduct.

Judge Beers becomes the 22nd judge to leave office under such a stipulation since the procedure was instituted in 2004. Like Judge Beers, 17 of the 22 were part-time justices of town or village courts.

Beers was village justice since 1993, is not an attorney and formerly served as a Delaware County deputy sheriff and Walton Village police officer.
