Lawmaker wants answers about sewage spills

NEW CITY – In the wake of the revelation that there have been 48 spills resulting in 3.4 million gallons of spillage in 2007 in Rockland County Sewer District #1, county Legislator Joseph Meyers wants answers.

The most recent spills in 2008 occurred march 5 at Airmont’s Saddle River Pump Station and March 9 at a Montebello pump station.

The lawmaker wants to know about infrastructure maintenance, the capacity of the system to meet potential area growth and details about how the district plans to address a state Department of Environmental Conservation consent order that requires the district take steps to alleviate the conditions that resulted in the high number of spills.

“We must address the infrastructure failings which are giving rise to the high incidence of sewer spills over the last few years as these spills are having a negative impact on our environment and the quality of life of the affected residents,” Meyers said.

The sewer district services the towns of Clarkstown and Ramapo and portions of Orangetown.
