State political leaders call for governor’s resignation

ALBANY – The chairmen of the state’s Republican and Conservative parties Monday called for Democratic Governor Eliot Spitzer’s resignation in light of revelations that he was linked by the feds to a prostitution ring.

“It is hard to see how Governor Spitzer can hope to govern effectively while the political, governmental and legal consequences of his behavior swirl about him,” said GOP Chairman Joseph Mondello.

He said the governor should do “the right thing” for himself, his family and the people of New York, by resigning.

State Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long said Spitzer should step aside ASAP.

“I think the governor can do himself a favor and show real leadership, and if the allegations are true, the one display the leadership he could do is understand his personal responsibility and resign as governor of the State of New York effective immediately.”

No calls of resignation, though, from the Democratic Party. Communications Director Curtis Taylor said Monday was “a difficult day for all New Yorkers but most of all our hearts and prayers go out to the Spitzer family.”
