| Rivers expected to peak tonight |
|
MONTICELLO – Sullivan County officials are concerned with this latest storm as heavy rains pound the region. Combined with warmer temperatures, snow is melting rapidly causing runoff and swollen waterways. There will be a river watch in effect tonight. The Delaware River floods at 12 feet at Callicoon and at 22 feet in Barryville. River waters are expected to peak tonight at one to two feet below flood level in both locations. That will cause minor flooding and pooling at the river’s edge. The Neversink River is expected to overflow one to two feet over the top of the spillway. That means along the Neversink and at Bridgeville, where moderate flooding occurs at 13 feet and heaving flooding occurs at 17 feet, the Neversink is expected to peak at 10.6 feet at about 7 p.m. tonight. County Emergency Management Commissioner Richard Martinkovic said the county will take every action, in cooperation with the towns and villages, to ensure the safety of residents. Meanwhile, NYSEG officials Tuesday said in the event of downed power lines, even those that appear dead, to stay away and call 1-800-572-1131. The utility said customers should stay out of flooded basements because energized wiring or outlets below the water line may pose a hazard. And Natural gas service in a flooded basement may also pose a danger. |
