WHITE PLAINS - A Cattaraugus County man, who worked for the State Department of State for just nine weeks, was killed Tuesday morning when the van he was driving crashed head on into a truck on Saw Mill River Road in Greenburgh, Town Police said. Bruce Plunkett, 46, of Great Valley, NY, was driving a state-licensed van southbound on Saw Mill River Road when he rammed into a flatbed tractor-trailer truck in the northbound lane that was stopped at the intersection waiting to make a left turn onto the Saw Mill River service road, Greenburgh Police said. Plunkett was transported to Westchester Medical Center by Greenburgh Police paramedics where he was later pronounced dead. Police said Plunkett worked in the codes division of the Department of State and was on his way to teach a class at the Westchester County Fire Academy. Police said it is a possibility that he might have fallen asleep at the wheel. The driver of the truck was identified as Steven Strebel, 47, of Manorville, NY in Suffolk County. The truck was owned by the Pride Equipment Corp. of Islip. The accident is under investigation. Anyone who may have witnessed it is asked to call the Greenburgh Police Department Detective Division at 914-682-5325. All calls will be kept confidential. |
