Youth recaptured after escape from facility

HIGHLAND – A juvenile who escaped from the state’s Highland Residential Center in Highland Monday was arrested after he fled through a hole in a fence and may have stolen a vehicle, State Police at Highland said Tuesday.

The youth, Wayne Fish of Campbell, NY, escaped around 10 p.m.

A search detail was implemented with the Ulster County Sheriff’s Office, Town of Lloyd, New Paltz and Rosendale Police and the State Police Aviation Unit.

Ulster County 911 received a call from a residence in Rifton reporting a suspicious person fitting the escapee’s description. Officers found a vehicle that had been stolen from the area of the youth center.

Roving and stationary posts were established and Fish was apprehended by a homeowner who saw him trying to steal his vehicle. The homeowner held him until the police arrived.

Fish was arraigned and remanded to the Ulster County Jail.
