| Prison guards to raise money for Ulster Vets’ Cemetery monument |
|
KINGSTON – Corrections officers at the Shawangunk and Wallkill State Correctional Facilities have volunteered to raise the money necessary to buy a monument to be installed at the recently approved Ulster County Veterans’ Cemetery at the New Paltz Rural Cemetery. This is not the first time the prison guards have been involved in community fundraising, said County Legislator Susan Zimet, who orchestrated establishment of the county veterans’ cemetery. “They in the past raised money and actually have a beautiful monument dedicated to all the veterans of foreign wars at the correctional facility at Shawangunk and they are saying they would like to have the honor to raise the money and do the same thing for us at the cemetery we have just created,” she said. The moment will be a five foot high black granite edifice on a pedestal and surrounded by white stones. |
