Funding available for Dutchess youth gang initiatives

POUGHKEEPSIE - The Dutchess County Youth Bureau is soliciting competitive Requests for Proposals for programs addressing youth gang prevention/intervention strategies for youth at risk of gang involvement.

“The Dutchess County Youth Gang Prevention Initiative provides a sense of community and creates a positive culture for youth,” according to Youth Bureau Executive Director William Sanchez.  “YGPI is designed to offer leadership opportunities and youth empowerment activities that provide pro-social values and skills and follow the Forty Developmental Assets framework, essential to a healthy community.”

County Executive Steinhaus said the Youth Gang Prevention Initiative “demonstrates the importance of community involvement today to protect our youth and provides resources for a better tomorrow.”

Funding is geared towards youth at risk of gang involvement who are not currently served through school or community-based programs.  Grants will be distributed as appropriate throughout the county, with priority given to geographic areas experiencing youth gang activity.  Agencies are encouraged to use these funds to enhance or create additional youth services.
