Fatal accident on Thruway

RAMAPO -- New York State Police Saturday investigated a fatal motor vehicle accident which occurred southbound on the New York State Thruway in the Town of Ramapo. A back seat passenger, identified as Brandon Berman, 19, of New City, was killed.

At about 5:45 p.m., a 2000 Lexus being driven by Britanny Lahm, 19, of New City, was traveling northbound in the left lane. She lost control of her car and struck the center guiderail, rolling over in to southbound traffic. The Lexus rolled several times and came to rest on its roof in the center lane.

A 2008 Honda, being driven by Juana Gonzalez, 44, of Thiells, was traveling southbound and swerved to avoid the rolling Lexus and lost control of her vehicle. The Honda left the roadway, rolled over and entered a wooded area adjacent to the right shoulder. There was no contact between the two vehicles.

Berman, the rear seat passenger of the Lexus, was partially ejected and suffered massive head trauma. He was pronounced dead at Nyack Hospital.

The other occupants of the Lexus are identified as Jason Pelletier, 19, of Suffern, Joseph Masullo, 19, of New City, and Justina Makinen, 18, of New City. The remaining occupants of the Lexus did not sustain life threatening injuries and were transported to area hospitals.

The driver of the Honda, Juana Gonzalez, sustained minor injuries. The front seat passenger of the Honda, her 10-year-old son, was transported to Westchester Medical Center where he is listed in stable condition with a head laceration and a bruised liver. The third occupant of the Honda, Gonzalez’s three-year-old daughter, sustained a minor cut to her knee.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
