Ten hospitalized with carbon monoxide poisoning

The Hamilton complex, a mix of residential
and business, is one of the city's newest
buildings, opening just two years ago

POUGHKEEPSIE – A carbon monoxide leak in the Hamilton Apartments at 445 Main Street in Poughkeepsie Wednesday afternoon sent residents onto the street for a breath of fresh air and 10 of them to the hospital for treatment of symptoms of CO poisoning.

City firefighters ventilated the building once all residents were cared for and by evening, everyone was allowed to return to their homes.

The plumbing inspector allowed everyone back, but for now without heat and hot water until the possible source of the odorless and tasteless gas could be definitively identified, said a fire department spokesman.

The Hamilton building, one of the newest in downtown, opened in 2006 and was a cornerstone of Poughkeepsie’s downtown revitalization effort.
