Telephone cable robbers strike for fourth time

MAYBROOK – For yet another time in the last several weeks, robbers have hit Frontier Communications by cutting expensive copper telephone cables right off utility poles.

Ten sections of copper telephone cable, 1,500 feet, were stolen off the poles on Route 208 in the Maybrook exchange (845-427) early Thursday morning interrupting service to approximately 180 customers.   Replacement cable is en route to the area.  Frontier crews were going to work through the night to restore telephone service by mid-morning on Friday.

This is the fourth such incident in recent weeks in Frontier’s Orange County serving area.  The New York State Police were notified and are investigating this incident.  When the person(s) who is responsible for this damage is found, Frontier will prosecute to the fullest extent of the law.

Frontier spokeswoman Karen Miller said stealing phone cables is a dangerous situation.

“These individuals are putting the community as risk because they are leaving them without telephone service, without access to 911, without communications. They are leaving businesses without access to telephone service so that has a financial impact on them,” she said.

Previously, robbers stole cable off telephone poles in the Town of Wallkill, near Goshen and Walden.

Frontier General Manager Debbie Bogdanski asked for the public’s assistance in catching the robbers. “We ask that anyone who saw any behavior that might be connected with this event call our company’s Security Hotline, 1-800-590-6605.   This toll free line is staffed around the clock.  All calls will be handled in a confidential manner. Anonymous information will also be accepted.”
