| Purple Heart recipient receives medal 57 years late |
||
NYACK – John Vasser of Nyack was wounded while serving in the U.S. Army in Korea, but never received a Purple Heart medal. He was wounded by a land mine on May 26, 1951 at Sobangdon. Congressman Eliot Engel learned that Vasser hadn’t received that medal or five others so he went to work securing them for the veteran. The House member who represents portions of Rockland and Westchester counties secured and presented the metals to Vasser recently. The other five medals are the National Defense Service Medal; the Korean Service Medal and Bronze Star Attachment; the Armed Forces Reserve Medal; the Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster; and the United Nations Medal. |
