| Authorities continue crackdown on illegal auto repair shops |
|
PEEKSKILL - A task force of investigators from the City of Peekskill Police and Building departments, and The New York State Department of Motor Vehicle’s continued an investigation into illegal repair shops being operated within the city limits. The investigation began late last month following a tip that several repair shops in the city were not properly licensed by the State Department of Motor Vehicles. Detective Kurt Buck was able to identify four businesses that were actively repairing motor vehicles and with the assistance of DMV investigators, shut down two after visiting them Tuesday. The owners of repair shops located at 17 S. Broad Street – Soan Calderon – and 625 South Street – Eduardo Rivera – were ordered to shut down and issued summonses for operating a repair shop without a license, a violation which carries a fine of up to $1,000. A third shop was not open for business when investigators visited it and the fourth has apparently gone out of business. City Building inspectors are also investigating numerous violations of the New York State Fire, Building, and Property Maintenance Code, and anticipate issuing further summonses. |
