Tax reform group is ‘disappointed’ with Assembly spending reductions bill

ALBANY – Tax Nightmare, a tax reform and relief organization, is “disappointed” with Assembly legislation that will be discussed in Albany today.

The circuit breaker provision does not go far enough, said Gioia Shebar of the group. “We’ve worked very hard and what we want is real relief and real reform,” she told MidHudsonNews.com. “We want the state to assume responsibility for paying for education, or most of it, which is their responsibility, rather than coming out of property taxes, which are killing the middle class.”

Ulster County Legislator Susan Zimet of New Paltz has joined forces with the Fiscal Policy Institute to propose their own omnibus bill, which they believe is better than the current proposal.

“The circuit breaker bill was supposed to give really true relief to people that desperately needed relief,” she said.

Opponents of the state proposal say the circuit breaker doesn’t go far enough in terms of providing tax relief for state residents.
