Westchester police officer commits suicide in Orange County home

WASHINGTONVILLE -- A 42-year-old member of the Sleepy Hollow Village Police Department shot and killed himself in his home in Washingtonville.

Washingtonville Village Police confirmed that Officer Antonio Benitez took his own life at around 8:30 a.m. Tuesday. His teenage daughter found him moments later at their Woodfield Drive home.

The Orange County Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy on Wednesday to confirm the cause of death, a spokesman said.

It is unclear whether Benitez used his service revolver, Washingtonville Police said.

A source said the officer had been ill and was out on disability.
