Sullivan to begin bulk energy purchases

MONTICELLO – Sullivan County will join the Municipal Electric and Gas Alliance – MEGA – in hopes of saving about $100,000 of its $1.2 million annual electric bill on government facilities.

The County Legislature’s Government Services Committee Thursday approved the bulk purchases, which are also enticing to other agencies, said Ronald Hiatt, a county legislator and chairman of the county’s energy conservation commission.

“A lot of schools came to our energy commission meetings and they are starting to jump on it as well; Fallsburg has already done it, I know BOCES is going to do it,” he said. “Even a small homeowner can join MEGA,” he said.

The full county legislature must approve the arrangement, which is seen as a formality when the members convene in regular session later this month.
