| Public turnout is light for O&R rate hike hearing |
||
Only two people spoke out at a state Public Service Commission hearing on a proposed almost $24 million increase in natural gas distribution base rates by Orange and Rockland Utilities. Port Jervis City Councilman George Belcher and Orange County Executive Edward Diana both told the hearing officers at the session in Middletown that they oppose the hike. Belcher said it would have a severe impact on local residents. “Prices are rising faster than wages for most workers, sapping their buying power,” he said. “Household savings rates are at their lowest levels since 1933 and debts levels are at record highs. Working families need relief from the impacts of high energy prices, which create a clear threat of sharp cuts to living standards.” Diana also stated his strong opposition to the increase. “It will place a tremendous burden on the homeowner as well as our large and small businesses,” he said. “It causes a ripple effect on the county and local governments as well as school districts, which would have to make up budget shortfalls.” O&R would hope to implement the higher rate by November 1, assuming the PSC approves it.
