Middletown Police Chief under scrutiny for statements on mayor

The Middletown Police Commission last night met behind closed doors for some four hours last evening, supposedly to discuss Police Chief Matthew Byrne’s public statement about activities at Mayor Joseph DeStefano’s nightclub.

Byrne had said there are problems there and they must be addressed.

DeStefano, who faces charges by the state Liquor Authority for owning two businesses with liquor licenses while serving as mayor, something the state said is a no-no, claims there are problems at his nightclub. But, sources suggest he wanted to bring Byrne up on charges as a result of his public pronouncement.

At last night’s closed-door executive session, Byrne met with the police commission for about 45 minutes and DeStefano met separately with the group for some two hours.

Commission Chairman Thomas Swierski said after the meeting that while he could not comment on the discussions, no decisions were made.
