Fire guts western Orange County home

Greenville – Fire of unknown original Tuesday morning gutted a single-family house at 388 Greenville Turnpike in the Town of Greenville.

There were no injuries as firefighters from several Orange County departments as well as Westfall, Pennsylvania, braved the cold temperatures to extinguish the flames.

Because of the remote location of the house, additional fire tank trucks and pumpers were called in to bring water to the scene from distant locations.

As fire officials inspected the house in an effort to determine a cause, a handwritten plastic sign remained tacked to a tree in front saying the house was for sale by owner.

The Salvation Army’s Port Jervis office had its relief truck on-scene with the purpose of assisting both firefighters and the victims, said Captain Al Krueger.

“We offer grief counseling as we as some practical need that will need to be filled – clothing, furniture, a place to stay at night, use of our phones and Internet to get hold of their insurance companies.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
