Screening at Stewart living up to demand, says new regional TSA director

STEWART AIRPORT – The Transportation Security Administration has deployed the latest technology for screening baggage at Stewart Airport, the new regional TSA Director says.

Brian Johansson, who is based in Albany and is also in charge of TSA operations at Albany, Plattsburgh and Saranac Lake airports, told MidHudsonNews.com that Stewart at Newburgh is doing well in terms of baggage and passenger screening.

“Although the airport is growing rapidly, TSA headquarters is doing a good job of keeping up with giving us additional allocations for hiring security officers and we are at our authorized number right now and expect to be quite healthy through the summer travel period which tends to be quite a bit busier at Stewart than the winter time does,” he said.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer, who has been pushing for enough security officers to handle the traffic at Stewart, said TSA is doing better.

“We still could use more; it’s better but not best. We want to make it best,” he said.

Johansson said TSA headquarters is very responsive to the needs at Stewart and responds to those needs in a most expeditious manner.
