Independent review of IP begins

BUCHANAN – The Independent Safety Evaluation Panel, initiated by Entergy, to look into the safety of its Indian Point nuclear power plant begins its study today with two public comment sessions today, at 2p.m. and 7 p.m.

Both will be held at Cortlandt Colonial reception Hall at 714 Albany Post Road in Cortlandt.

At the same time, State Senator Thomas Morahan of Rockland County and Assemblywoman Sandy Galef of Westchester County Monday announced they drafted legislation requiring the operator of Indian Point, Entergy, to “fully inform the public and key officials of any radioactive emissions, as well as to establish and maintain a toll-free telephone number to provide 24-hour updates on unplanned, unscheduled and/or inadvertent releases of radioactive materials to the environment.”

“The safety of the Indian Point energy facility is of paramount importance to the 20 million citizens who live in its vicinity, and the function of Indian Point is especially significant to those citizens residing in my district where the plant is located,” said Galef.
