Dutchess to make safety improvements at Harlem Valley Rail Trail intersection

POUGHKEEPSIE - Safety improvements will begin soon on the Harlem Valley Rail Trail at the trail’s intersection with New York State Route 343 in the Town of Amenia.

“The Harlem Valley Rail Trail is utilized by thousands of residents and visitors all year long,” said Dutchess County Executive William Steinhaus. “These improvements will help ensure trail users can safely enjoy the park.”

The Harlem Valley Rail Trail will be realigned to cross Route 343 at a 90 degree angle.   This new angle will improve the sight distance for trail users to more safely cross the state highway. Additional pavement markings will also be placed on Route 343 and the Harlem Valley Rail Trail to make the intersection more visible to both motorists and pedestrians.

Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, May 5 and is expected to be completed by early summer. The Harlem Valley Rail Trail will be closed at the crossing location during the day while construction is underway.

In the evening and on the weekends, unpaved surface will be open to trail users.  Signs advising trail users of the closing will be in place throughout the construction duration.
