Possible hand grenade found near school

LAKE HUNTINGTON – State Police at Liberty are investigating to determine if a hand grenade-like device is real.

Police received a call from the Sullivan West Junior Senior High School in Lake Huntington Wednesday that a possible hand grenade was found near the school grounds.

Under the supervision of a teacher, students from an earth science class were conducting a littler clean up on the grounds of the school as part of Earth Day. About 10:30 a.m., a student spotted what appeared to be a hand grenade near the wooded area next to the parking lot.

The students in the group notified their teacher who moved the entire class out of the area and contacted the office. The school went into lockdown and moved all of the students into a distant section of the building.

There was no immediate threat to any of the students or the school structure, police said.

The suspected grenade was rendered safe by the State Police Bomb Disposal Unit. A complete search of the exterior and interior of the building by State Police and school officials was conducted with no other suspicious items found.

The investigation is continuing as police try to determine if the device is real or fake.
