Minnewaska fire slows down

CRAGSMOOR – The fire that is still burning at Minnewaska State Park in Ulster County has been 80 percent contained with minor injuries being reported by fire crews. The lone structural loss was a ranger hut inside the park.

Firefighting efforts have been ongoing around the clock with bulldozers cutting a fire line in front of the fire’s projected path. Helicopters dumped large buckets of water on the flames.

The cooler air over the weekend and Monday made firefighting efforts more successful as well.

Over 30 fire departments from throughout the region have been battling the flames, which destroyed over 3,000 acres of forest.

In emergency situations, residents of the area of urged to call 911. If they have questions about the fire, they should call 845-255-0752.
