Poughkeepsie student melee remains under investigation

POUGHKEEPSIE – On Monday, City of Poughkeepsie Police were summoned to the intersection of Hammersley Avenue and Church Street for reports of a large group of teenagers fighting in the street, for the second time that day.

The second incident occurred around 4 p.m. and when police arrived, they encountered a group of 15-20 teens arguing and fighting as well as blocking traffic at the intersection.

At one point, police attempted to detain Jamela Barnett.  During the attempts, an officer was filmed forcing Barnett, 15, to the ground before handcuffing her. The action was caught on a video, said Police Chief Thomas Pape.

“We were made aware of a video I have seen, on its face, a 17-second video that is very disturbing,” Pape said. “I would like, as the police chief, and my detectives are investigating this incident, we are looking for more video.”

The chief asked anyone with other video to call the police in confidence at 845-451-4142.

Two were arrested at the scene, Barnett and her 12-year-old sister.
