Newburgh street cams keeping lid on crime

NEWBURGH – There are 34 street cameras for Newburgh City Police to monitor as a crime fighting tool.

All but one are working well, Police Chief Douglas Solomon told the city council Thursday night. One of the devices is not functioning.

“The whole system at this point is functioning well; it’s very useful as a law enforcement tool as well as a deterrent, combining that with shot Spotter and our other crime fighting initiatives collectively is what has driven the crime rate to historic lows at this point,” he said.

Solomon said his department has identified four additional areas where street cameras would be effective and they will be seeking out a funding source to pay for them.
