Newburgh poised to hire company to remediate West End Firehouse asbestos

NEWBURGH – Engine 3 should be able to move back into the West End Firehouse on Upper Broadway in Newburgh within a month as the city council is set to approve a remediation contract with ACA Environmental Services on Monday night.

Mayor Torrance Harvey told a workshop session of the council Thursday night that he is “jumping for joy” to learn that the remediation will only take three days.

“When I heard these numbers, $30,785, I was amazed, and from my understanding, this can be done fairly quickly – a quick turnaround in terms of remediation and getting our guys back in there,” Harvey said.

Engine 3 and its crew have been working out of the main firehouse at the east end of Broadway, adding minutes to the response time on fire calls.

A plan to temporarily house the fire truck and crew at the Goodwill firehouse just over the city line in the Town of Newburgh, never materialized.
