Port Jervis bank robbed, suspect nabbed - Update!


PORT JERVIS – Police have a suspect in custody in connection with the late Thursday afternoon robbery at the TD Bank branch at 205 East Main Street in Port Jervis.

The 35-year-old suspect, later identified Joseph Hernandez, 35, of Jeffersonville, fled the scene before police arrived, but he was spotted by Deerpark Police at a road checkpoint on Route 97/42 between Sparrowbush and Port Jervis.

Hernandez, who is a state parolee after being released from prison on February 1, attempted to flee in his car while being chased by officers for two miles during which he struck a Port Jervis Police car. Officers were able to take him into custody on Route 42 in Sparrowbush after forcing his vehicle to stop.

Port Jervis Police Chief William Warden said the suspect was charged in the City of Port Jervis and Town of Deerpark with robbery, criminal possession of stolen property, attempted assault, reckless endangement, criminal mischief, violation of parole, endangering the welfare of a child and several vehicle and traffic violations.

He was arraigned and remanded to the Orange County Jail without bail.

The Sparrowbush Fire Department assisted police at the scene.
