Three county DA offices top recovered unemployment insurance fraud benefits

ALBANY – District attorney’s offices in Westchester, Orange and Dutchess are among the top prosecutors in the state in recovered unemployment insurance benefits that were fraudulently obtained in 2017.

Westchester recovered $316,282; Orange recovered $187,587; and Dutchess recovered $132,808.

“Bilking the system of financial aid earmarked for people in need has a collateral effect,” said Westchester County District Attorney Anthony Scarpino, Jr. “Business pays more and, in turn, those costs are passed along to consumers.”

Orange County DA David Hoovler said his office “has prioritized crimes which defraud government. Unemployment insurance fraud cases are no exception.” He said the state Labor Department initially refers cases to the State Police, which conduct their investigations in consultation with the DA’s office.
