“Building the Beloved Community” initiative to be launched in Newburgh

NEWBURGH – The City of Newburgh Human Right Commission is teaming up with Calvary Presbyterian Church and the Fair Housing Justice Center to create a new initiative – “Building the Beloved Community.”

Human Rights Commission Chairwoman Ramona Burton said the motive for the effort is to move the city “much closer to reaching Dr. King’s vision of building the ‘beloved’ City of Newburgh.

The effort is aimed at highlighting fair housing rights, discrimination and tools and resources to aid in securing fair housing.

“”Part of this Beloved Community is also at some point is to have that conversation of really what is affordable housing, who is that for as opposed to who do we think it’s for?” she said.

The collaboration between community activists, fair housing advocates and religious leaders will launch the new initiative at 6:15 p.m. on Thursday, December 13 at Newburgh Free Library.
